Trump's Military Payments and Climate Agency Dismantling Impact Senate Funding
Full Transcript
President Trump announced on Wednesday that U.S. service members will receive a one-time bonus of $1,776, termed a "warrior dividend." The bonus, which totals $2.6 billion, is set to be paid to 1.45 million military personnel before December 20.
This payment is being funded by a $2.9 billion appropriation under the new tax and spending law, referred to as the One Big, Beautiful Bill, and potentially by tariffs, although the White House did not confirm the latter.
Active duty service members with pay grades of O-6 or below, as well as reserve component service members on active duty orders of 31 days, are eligible for this payment. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth praised the initiative, stating that it honors service members and commemorates the 250 years of U.S. military defense.
However, the announcement has complicated ongoing Senate funding negotiations, particularly in the context of Trump's proposed dismantling of a climate agency, which has led to a collapse of a potential funding deal in the Senate.
