President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to the families of two National Guard members who were shot in Washington, D.C. last week. U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, who was 20 years old, was fatally shot during the incident, while her colleague, U.S.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition. Trump stated he spoke with Beckstrom's parents, describing them as devastated by the loss, and mentioned that he discussed a visit to the White House for both families, saying, 'When you’re ready, because that’s a tough thing, come to the White House.

We’re going to honor Sarah.' According to reports from The Guardian and Chicago Tribune, both service members were part of the West Virginia National Guard, deployed in D.C. as part of Trump's initiative to enhance policing efforts in the capital.

Vigils have been held across West Virginia to honor Beckstrom, with one notable gathering taking place at Webster County High School, where she had previously attended. The principal, Jarrod Hankins, remarked on Beckstrom’s character, describing her as a student who exhibited quiet strength and a contagious smile.

The tragic shooting has led to significant legal repercussions as a 29-year-old Afghan national has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed.

Following the shooting, the Trump administration responded by suspending asylum processing and halting visa issuances for Afghan passport holders. Governor Patrick Morrisey of West Virginia visited Wolfe's family and spoke at the vigil, emphasizing Beckstrom's legacy, stating, 'Though her life lasted far too short, she has left a mark that’s going to last forever.' Funeral arrangements for Beckstrom have not yet been finalized, and the community continues to rally in support of both families during this challenging time.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi also expressed her intentions to meet with Wolfe's family, highlighting the deep impact this tragic incident has had on the community and the nation. The incident raises broader concerns about safety and security in Washington, D.C., amid ongoing discussions about policing strategies.
