Gun Control Activists Urge Congress to Act After Shooting
Full Transcript
Gun control activist Gabby Giffords responded to news of a shooting that occurred at Brown University shortly after 4:00 p.m., which left two dead and eight wounded. During a press conference at 6:30 p.m., officials stated that they did not know what type of firearm was used and had not apprehended a suspect, but were seeking a male dressed in black.
In a post on X, Giffords urged Congress to act, saying, "My heart breaks for Brown University. Students should only have to worry about studying for finals right now, not hiding from gunfire. Guns are the leading cause of death for young people in America.
This is a five alarm fire and our leaders in Washington have ignored it for too long. Americans are tired of waiting around for Congress to decide that protecting kids matters." Giffords did not specify what actions she would like Congress to take, as details about the shooting, including the type of gun used and the motivation of the shooter, remained unknown at the time of her statement.
The press conference did not confirm whether the deceased were students of the university.
