Power cuts are set to impact most regions of Ukraine, with electricity being cut for between eight and sixteen hours, as reported by state transmission system operator Ukrenergo. This drastic measure comes after Russian attacks on energy infrastructure have reduced Ukraine's generating capacity to zero.

Russian forces have escalated their assaults on Ukraine’s energy grid, launching hundreds of drones targeting facilities across the country, resulting in at least seven fatalities according to Ukrainian officials.

The strikes not only disrupted electricity but also compromised heating and water supplies in cities including Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk. Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk noted that the situation was stabilizing but warned that regular power cuts could persist in several regions.

The attacks have been characterized as unprecedented in scale, with Grynchuk highlighting the difficulty of intercepting ballistic missiles. Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian drones targeted nuclear power substations, raising alarms about nuclear safety in Europe.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called for urgent action from the International Atomic Energy Agency, stating that Russia is endangering nuclear safety by targeting these facilities. He also urged China and India to leverage their influence over Russia to halt the strikes.

Experts warn that the ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure could lead to heating outages as winter approaches, with Kyiv's School of Economics estimating that half of Ukraine's natural gas production has been shut down due to the strikes.

Oleksandr Kharchenko, a top energy expert, expressed that if Kyiv's power and heating plants remain offline for more than three days in sub-zero temperatures, the city would face a technological disaster.

In response to these attacks, Ukraine has intensified its strikes on Russian oil depots and refineries, aiming to disrupt Moscow’s energy exports. The Russian defense ministry claimed that its air defense units successfully destroyed 44 Ukrainian drones in recent operations.

The situation reflects the ongoing humanitarian crisis exacerbated by Russia's military aggression, emphasizing the geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe.
