On December 13, 2025, a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others. According to CBS News, the incident took place around 4 p.m. in a classroom within the Barus & Holley engineering building, where final exams were underway.

Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O'Hara reported that the gunman, described as a male dressed in black, fled the scene, prompting a manhunt that involved more than 400 local and federal law enforcement officers.

Eight of the injured were transported to Rhode Island Hospital, with several reported in critical condition. Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed that all victims were students and expressed her sorrow, stating, "This is a day of tremendous sorrow".

The university issued a shelter-in-place order as authorities searched for the suspect. An initial report hinted that a suspect was in custody, which was later retracted, causing confusion among the community.

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigation, with federal resources deployed to support local authorities. As the search for the gunman continued, students and residents expressed their shock and fear, highlighting the vulnerability of educational institutions amid ongoing concerns about gun violence in the U.S.
