The FBI has arrested Brian Cole Jr., a 30-year-old man from Woodbridge, Virginia, in connection with the placement of two pipe bombs outside the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee headquarters on January 5, 2021, the day before the Capitol riot.

According to CBS News, Cole faces charges of using an explosive device, with more charges likely as the investigation continues. His arrest, which marks the first in the ongoing pipe bomb investigation, comes after years of federal efforts to address domestic terrorism and was facilitated by cellphone records and license plate data that placed him at the scene.

Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that the arrest was due to a reevaluation of evidence already in possession of the FBI without any new tips emerging. The pipe bombs, made from pipes, kitchen timers, and black powder, were viable devices capable of causing injury, although they did not detonate and were discovered only after the Capitol was overwhelmed by rioters.

This development has been seen as a crucial step in restoring public trust in law enforcement agencies, which have faced scrutiny over their handling of the investigation. DNC Chair Ken Martin emphasized the need for justice in political violence incidents following the arrest.

The case has perplexed investigators for nearly five years, with the FBI previously offering a $500,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
