Netflix has implemented a significant policy change by banning the ability to cast shows and movies from mobile devices to televisions for most of its subscribers. Instead, users are now required to utilize the official Netflix app on smart TVs or connect devices directly to watch content on larger screens.

This change was first reported on Reddit on November 14, and the Netflix Help Center indicates that only subscribers who are not on ad-supported plans may still have access to casting features for older devices like third-generation or older Chromecast, Google Nest Hub Smart Display, certain Vizio TVs, and certain Compal TVs.

However, users with ad-supported plans will not have access to casting or mirroring, which has raised concerns among viewers looking for more flexible viewing options. Testing has shown that the casting feature is no longer available on certain LG TVs, and attempts to mirror screens from devices such as an iPhone 17 Pro have resulted in error messages, specifically the 'E100' error when using a Netflix Standard plan without ads.

The reasons behind Netflix's abrupt policy change remain unclear, as the company has not provided public comment. This shift comes at a time when many streaming services, including Netflix, are increasing subscription prices, prompting some users to reconsider their streaming options.

With December on the horizon, significant releases are anticipated from major platforms, including the much-anticipated conclusion of 'Stranger Things,' alongside new seasons from other popular shows, intensifying competition among streaming services in a bid to retain and attract viewers.
