Full Transcript
Netflix is set to lose two popular Christmas movies this weekend, with subscribers having until November 30 to watch them. According to Syracuse.com, the titles being removed are Christmas with the Kranks and Tangerine.
Christmas with the Kranks, a Christmas comedy released in 2004, features a star-studded cast including Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dan Aykroyd, Erik Per Sullivan, Cheech Marin, Jake Busey, and M. Emmet Walsh.
Based on the 2001 novel Skipping Christmas by John Grisham, this PG-rated film follows Luther Krank, played by Tim Allen, and his wife Nora, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, as they decide to skip their Christmas festivities after their daughter Blair, portrayed by Julie Gonzalo, leaves for the Peace Corps.
Instead of spending money on decorations and gifts, they plan a Caribbean cruise. However, their plans are thrown into chaos when their daughter calls on Christmas Eve to announce her unexpected return with her new fiancé.
Despite its holiday theme, Christmas with the Kranks has not fared well critically, holding a mere 5% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Some viewers have harshly criticized it, even labeling it as one of the worst movies ever made, while others have defended it as a misunderstood film.
In contrast, Tangerine, released in 2015, presents a very different take on the holiday. This R-rated indie film, directed by Sean Baker and shot entirely on iPhones, features first-time actress Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor.
Tangerine tells the story of two transgender sex workers, Sin-Dee Rella and Alexandra, on Christmas Eve. Their narrative centers around Sin-Dee's quest to confront her boyfriend and pimp, Chester, after learning of his infidelity while she was in prison.
This film has garnered significant acclaim, receiving a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes and winning 24 awards out of 42 nominations at various film festivals worldwide. Although Netflix will be removing these titles, viewers can still find alternatives.
Christmas with the Kranks is available for rent on Prime Video and Apple TV, while Tangerine can be streamed on Peacock or accessed for free on Pluto TV. The impending removal of these holiday films highlights Netflix's ongoing content management strategies and the viewing habits surrounding the holiday season.
