Full Transcript
Full House star Dave Coulier, known for his role as Uncle Joey, is facing a second cancer diagnosis just months after being declared free of Stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In a Tuesday interview with Today, Coulier revealed that following his chemotherapy treatment, which lasted seven months, he was informed by his doctors there were no signs of lymphoma.
However, a follow-up PET scan conducted in October revealed a new and unrelated cancer diagnosis. Coulier stated, 'To go through chemotherapy and feel that relief of, Whoah, it’s gone, and then to get a test that says, Well, now you’ve got another kind of cancer, it is a shock to the system.' The 66-year-old actor disclosed that he has been diagnosed with P16 squamous carcinoma at the base of his tongue.
This type of cancer is related to the human papillomavirus, or HPV, specifically HPV-16. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, P16 is a protein that serves as a marker for HPV, and P16-positive cancers can arise from infections that may have occurred decades ago.
Coulier explained, 'A lot of people carry the HPV virus, but they said mine activated and turned into a carcinoma.' Currently, Coulier is undergoing 35 radiation treatments, which he anticipates will conclude by December 31.
He noted that the prognosis for P16 squamous carcinoma is very promising, with a curability rate exceeding 90 percent. Coulier emphasized the importance of early detection in his health journey, stating, 'The thing that has really saved my life for both cancers is early detection.' This recent health challenge comes shortly after Coulier's previous battle with lymphoma, shedding light on the ongoing health struggles faced by public figures.
His experience resonates with many fans, highlighting the critical importance of health awareness in the entertainment industry. The report on Coulier’s diagnosis was covered by Alana Mastrangelo for Breitbart News.
