Full Transcript
The UK has signed a new trade deal with South Korea focusing on increasing exports of cars, Scottish salmon, and Guinness. This deal, announced by UK Trade Minister Chris Bryant and South Korean counterpart Yeo Han-koo at a Samsung store in London, aims to enhance economic ties and is expected to add an extra 400 million pounds annually to the British economy.
It replaces an existing agreement and lowers the threshold for British or EU content in cars from 55% to 25%, allowing manufacturers to use components from China while still qualifying for zero tariffs.
The deal provides tariff-free trade on 98% of goods and gives British firms opportunities in South Korean public procurement and legal services. Industry leaders like Richard Molyneux from Jaguar Land Rover and Nik Jhangiani from Diageo have welcomed the arrangement, emphasizing its importance for growth and market access amidst global trade shifts.
